LACK

Felix Rehfeld’s lacquer paintings theorize color as material in a realistically seeming way. Rehfeld gives the color shape, creating color and picture landscapes, that show an artist-created reality.

In an elaborate and detail-loving process he creates color surfaces in a three-part process that curve out of the canvas, much like a lacquered surface. First, the artist creates a miniature-sized model, which he then photographs from different angles, only to bring them onto the canvas in a fine-detailed manner.

The young painter, born 1981 in Hadamar / Niederzeuzheim, has been working with the material and it’s painted appearance. At first, only monochrome pools of color are created, followed closely by the forming of actual motifs like landscapes and mountains. In his new works, the lacquer paintings, he’s headed back to his roots, with the color itself and it’s different shadows and creating the images perspectives.
