For the exhibition GUTE GEGEND at the Städtische Galerie im Leeren Beutel, Nico Sawatzki has developed a new body of work. All the pieces were created specifically for this exhibition. Sawatzki’s painting moves between abstraction, landscape, and memory. Through layered overlays of spray paint and acrylic, atmospheric pictorial spaces emerge that evoke horizons, weather, or distant landscapes.
For the first time, the artist has provided his paintings with coordinates that allow for a concrete localization of the works in and around Regensburg, Germany. These are places where memories were formed or that are associated with specific emotions. This offers a very personal insight into the Regensburg-based artist’s upbringing in this city. The titles of these new works describe the stories Sawatzki associates with the locations. The result is a series of images that bridge the gap between cartography and atmosphere. Sawatzki’s works do not depict places, but rather their emotional resonances – and thus create a personal topography of memory, perception, and landscape.
