Nico Sawatzki creates imaginary spatial constructions that bring about the effect of enormous depth by condensing and dissolving individual parts of the picture into multi-layered constructions – and a simultaneous de-construction. Initially, the artist worked with a very reduced color palette, making exclusive use of the “non-colors” black and white. Following this initial phase soft pastel tones of blue, pink, green, and yellow that evoke the natural hue of the sky entered into the artist’s works. His most recent works are more intense in color and feature new elements like etched lines or speckles of paint, furthering the artist’s exploration of spatial realms.
In his series “Schattenfuge”, Sawatzki expands on his technique toward an almost architectural detail, dividing his landscapes horizontally into two sections and inserting a temporal shadow gap, which seems to focus in on a single moment in time. The color palette in this new series alternates between dark blues and bright orange tones, inspiring memories of sunrise and sunset. Like the Romantics, Nico Sawatzki wants to give expression to a deeply felt reality. For this purpose he takes up memories as moods, concise images from childhood and the near past.
