Camille Hannah was born in 1977 in Melbourne, Australia.
She lives and works in Melbourne, Australia.
Using oil and polymer paints on acrylic glass, Hannah creates works that can be assigned to the art-historically rich technique of reverse glass painting. In the classical process of reverse glass painting, the outlines of figurative pictorial elements are defined before the opaque and multi-layered application of paint. Camille Hannah, on the other hand, applies the paint in a completely abstract form. Her color palette in soft earth tones, powdery rose tones and the use of gold stands out from tradition. The treatment and texture of the surface result in a mixture of sheen, refraction and reflection of the color pigments and the transparency of the medium, which lend a transcendent radiance and tactile appeal to her artworks.
In contrast to earlier reverse glass paintings, Hannah’s works are characterized by an expressive brushstroke – including visible fibre structures. The opacity of the paint application is iridescent and thus promotes the interplay between the transparent medium and the layers of paint. The result is an aesthetic of the sensory, a threshold between viewer and object/surface that fluctuates between seeing and the desire of touch. Based on her gestures, the movement of her brushstrokes, the artist critically examines her own position and place within art history and pleads for a perception of her art without objectification, subordination and essentialization.
