Blue has shaped the history of art more profoundly than almost any other color. Whether as the precious pigment of ultramarine, a symbol of spirituality, infinity, and melancholy, or an expression of light, nature, and imagination, blue has accompanied and inspired artists for centuries.
The exhibition CHROMA | BLAU brings together works by Andreas Amrhein, Ashwan, Marc Chagall, Christo, Giulia Dall’Olio, Roberto Ghezzi, Silvia Inselvini, Johanna Strobel, Henri Matisse, Otto Piene, Nico Sawatzki, Tomislav Topić, and Angelika Tóth. Spanning generations and diverse artistic positions, the works are united by their predominantly blue palette. The spectrum ranges from luminous, transparent hues to deep cobalt, indigo, and ultramarine.
Painting, drawing, photography, and works on paper engage in a dynamic dialogue. Charcoal, oil, spray paint, and photographic processes interact with silver, black, gray, and earthy tones, expanding the expressive possibilities of blue through materiality and atmosphere. Here, blue does not become a monochromatic doctrine but rather a shared point of departure for a rich and multifaceted artistic exploration.
CHROMA | BLAU presents blue as a unifying element across eras and media. The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the many manifestations of this remarkable color – as pigment, as light, as landscape, as memory, and as an independent visual language.
