Asta von Unger

Asta von Unger was born in 1970 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
She lives and works in Munich, Germany.

Asta von Unger moved from philosophy to painting; aesthetics and phenomenology were her main areas of interest during her philosophy studies, and her studies under Umberto Eco also consistently encouraged her to seek a connection between theory and practice. Painting has always been a part of von Unger’s life; she then intensified her practice by studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, from which she graduated in 2010 as a master student of Günther Förg.

In her artistic practice, the artist consistently combines a theoretical exploration of complex, even scientific, topics with experimental, painterly approaches. At the same time, she served as an art and culture ambassador during her tenure at the Goethe-Institut in Bologna. Von Unger is particularly inspired by interdisciplinarity, whether in science or art.
