Nico Sawatzki was born in 1984 in Regensburg, Germany.
He lives and works in Regensburg, Germany.
Nico Sawatzki’s artistic roots lie in street art. In 2012, he began to apply his artistic signature to canvas and paper using spray paint as his most important tool. In his works, Sawatzki creates imaginary spatial constructions that generate an enormous depth effect through compression and dissolution – construction and simultaneous deconstruction – using spray paint and acrylic within individual sections of the picture. For a long time, the artist worked with a very reduced color palette, using only the “non-colors” black and white. Over the past three years, these have been supplemented by soft pastel shades of blue, pink, green and yellow. His latest works are characterized by strong and intensely bright colors and a play of horizontal and vertical changes in perspective.
In his “Schattenfuge” series, Sawatzki extends his technique to an almost architectural detail by inserting a temporal shadow gap that seems to focus on a single moment in time. The color palette of this series alternates between dark blues and bright oranges, evoking memories of sunrise or sunset. Like the Romantics, Nico Sawatzki wants to give expression to a deeply felt reality. To this end, he takes up memories as moods, striking images from childhood and the near past, and brings them to the canvas in vibrant colors.
